Cleaning Natural Stone Floors

Natural stone floors can be a beautiful addition to your home, but keeping them clean can be tricky.

The slate usually used in stone flooring is porous, making it prone to soaking up dirt and grime. The surface of a natural floor is also quite fragile and certain cleaning solutions may damage the stone. This, however, doesn’t mean cleaning a natural stone floor needs to be difficult. The following is a step-by-step guide to restoring your stone floor’s original beauty:

1. Give the floor a preliminary once-over with an ordinary broom and dustpan to remove loose debris.

2. After the sweeping, run a dust mop across the floor to pick-up any dust and dirt that may be left between the tiles.

3. Fill a bucket with hot water and mop the floor. If necessary, add a mild liquid dish soap to the water. This will help remove heavy soil and sticky residue.

4. Let the floor dry and mop with clean water to remove soap residue.

Never use an acidic cleaner on your natural floor. Even a slightly acidic solution could cause damage to the surface.
