A spring thaw can cause flooding and damage to many homes, which is why many people are preparing their homes for water damage restoration.
In most cases, the biggest problem after a flood, in terms of property damage, will be mold. It is important to thoroughly inspect your home for mold after a flood. Leslie Henderson, president and CEO of the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, said a complete disinfecting is standard after a flood.
“You have to wipe down every surface,” Henderson said. “Some prefer not to use bleach, but bleach is kind of the standard.”
The Federal Emergency Management Agency suggests disinfecting with a 10 percent bleach solution – about two cups of bleach for every gallon of water. It is important to wear gloves and goggles while disinfecting. It is also advisable to purchase a respirator to protect your lungs from airborne contaminants.
