Shampooing a Carpet

Learning how to shampoo a carpet is something most homeowners should know.

Carpets should be thoroughly cleaned at least once, if not twice, a year to keep them in good condition. Dirt ground into carpets can damage the fibers, making them ware faster, which means regular carpet shampooing will also help prolong the life of your carpet.

Before shampooing a carpet, you should remove all furniture from the room in which you will be working. If this is not possible, move all the furniture to one end of the carpet. After this, vacuum the carpet very thoroughly. This will remove all the loose dirt between the fibers, making the area easier to clean.

When you finally begin shampooing the carpet, start the project in a corner of the room. Do a four or five foot square area at a time. Move the carpet shampooer over the area several times, each time applying more cleaner to the material. If the carpet is really soiled, approach the same area a second time from a different angle.

After shampooing, allow the carpet to dry before walking on it and moving furniture. To dry carpets faster, turn your home’s air conditioning to a cooler temperature.
