Grout Cleaning 101
Cleaning and maintaining grout is a challenge for many homeowners.
The dirt, grease, and grime on dirty grout is typically of an acidic nature. Due to these acidic qualities it is necessary to use an alkaline based cleaning product to react with the grease and emulsify the contaminates. After this emulsification, these contaminates can be scrubbed away and extracted from the grout.
If the grout in question is in a bathroom, the grime between the tiles is commonly mold or mildew, both of which cause grout stains. In the kitchen it could be a combination of food stains and household grime. Wherever the stain, use gentler cleaners first. Begin the cleaning process with simple household items like vinegar or baking soda. Spray or dab the cleaner onto a small length of grout and scrub with a stiff brush. By scrubbing in small circles, rather than up and down, you will remove more debris from the grout.
