Green cleaning and the EPA’s Design for the Environment Program

In recent years, there has been a decided shift to focusing on products that are not only safe for consumers, but also safe for the environment. Known as environmentally-friendly or green, these products contain ingredients that are supposedly better for the environment or less likely to cause it harm. However, how can you know when a product is truly “green?”

While many cleaning products tout the label “green,” only some have the DfE label. The Design for the Environment (DfE) program was implemented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help consumers more easily identify products that are truly safe for the environment. Through rigorous screening and testing, the DfE label graces only products that have been shown to have the least possible impact on the environment.

Specifically, the DfE program has targeted cleaning products, creating an extensive list of criteria and requirements that cleaning products must meet in order to receive the DfE label. From testing each ingredient in the product to analyzing how the ingredients work together, the DfE ensures that only those cleaning products that have and are predicted to have a negligible impact on the environment is given this “green” label.

Thus far, the DfE has awarded their label to nearly 3,000 products.
