ExxonMobil donated $1,190,993.25 to the University of Texas via its matching gift program today. The company matches charitable donations made by its employees and retirees.

The donation is the largest matching gift the university has ever received and beats Exxon’s next highest match by more than $100,000. Over the past 36 years, the company has been UT’s biggest contributor, donating over $50.5 million dollars through various means.

The funds will help the school avoid further cuts and tuition increases down the line.

The Austin carpet cleaners of WOW Total Cleaning have learned of a major innovation in light bulb technology.

Nuventix, an Austin-based thermal management company has helped General Electric make a major breakthrough that will change the future of the light bulb industry forever: household LED light bulbs.

LED light bulbs have been in the works for a long while now, but the company had been previously unable to give LED bulbs enough longevity to be feasible without an adequate cooling system. The challenge was that including a cooling system would greatly increase bulb size. Nuventix’s synthetic jet will allow LED bulbs to be cooled while retaining a normal light bulb size.

The new LED light bulbs will run on 27 watts of power and will be strong enough to replace 100 watt incandescent bulbs. They will be unveiled at the LightFair trade show in Las Vegas later this week.

Austin carpet cleaners of WOW Total Cleaning learned yesterday that the City of Austin has offered a new downtown recycling program that will make it easier for businesses in the area to recycle.

In the past, nearly 400 restaurants, bars, and businesses that were located in the downtown area were only able to recycle glass and paper products. There were designated bins for each recyclable product, and they could not be mixed together. The City of Austin announced yesterday that there will now be recycling bins that can combine paper, plastic, glass, aluminum and cardboard in the downtown area.

This change will not add any extra costs to these businesses, and is covered under a one-year contract with Waste Management. The City of Austin was looking for a way to make it easier and more efficient to recycle more products. Businesses have said that the new streamline program will tremendously help.

To learn more about this new recycling program, please visit the Statesman website today.

Spring cleaning doesn’t require purchasing all new cleaning products in order to thoroughly clean each room in a home. Several items that are already found in most households can be utilized for spring cleaning activities.

There are numerous unexpected items that can make a big impact on cleaning rituals. These items include: lemons, old towels, coffee grinds, salt, and vinegar. Lemons can be heated on the stove in order to combat intense unappealing odors around the kitchen. Old towels can be recycled into cleaning rags in order to avoid spending extra money on paper towels. These towels can also be reused after a simple washing.

Coffee grinds can naturally eliminate refrigerator odors. A bowl of old coffee grinds should be placed into the refrigerator in order to absorb these lingering smells. Salt can help remove build-up of bacteria on sponges, and white vinegar can act as a floor cleaner on almost any surface, just by mixing a solution containing equal parts of water and white vinegar.

According to a study by the American Cleaning Institute, 62 percent of Americans consider spring cleaning habitual in nature.

Spring cleaning has become a tradition in many households across the United States, and the study reveals that 73 percent of individuals believe that spring cleaning should be a staple in their households. Also, out of the individuals that were surveyed, 18 percent confessed that spring cleaning is the only time that they actually clean their homes.

Nice weather played a factor in the interest of spring cleaning for 72 percent of those surveyed. The area of the home that was focused on the most intently during spring cleaning was the windows, followed by blinds and curtains, and the kitchen was the first room that was addressed during this cleaning period.
