7 Tips For Carpet Cleaning With Pets

Who doesn’t love a comfortable and cozy carpet? As one of the most popular flooring options in today’s homes, it is important to regularly clean them to keep them smelling and looking their best. This is especially the case for homeowners with pets.

Pet-Related Carpet Issues

Whether it is the result of owning a dog, cat, rodent, or other beloved furry friend, pets undoubtedly play a massive role in carpet dirt and odor buildup. Some of the most common pet-related carpet troubles include:

  • Feces, vomit, and urine accidents
  • Excessive fur buildup
  • Mud and stains from playing outside

7 Tips For Carpet Cleaning  With Pets

Although pets can pose a threat to the cleanliness of carpets, there are a plethora of ways to keep their appearance and scent feeling as good as new! Let’s explore some of the best practices for maintaining a clean carpet with pets:

#1: Remove Mud And Bathroom Stains

Let’s face it: bathroom and muddy accidents happen with even the most well-behaved of pets! If a pet urinates or tracks muddy paws onto the carpet, there are a variety of popular at-home techniques to remove these stains.

If the spot found is still wet, first blot and dry the area with a paper towel to soak up as much liquid as possible. Then, use a mixture of dishwashing soap and water to scrub the stained area clean. After the area is clean, one heavy-duty tool that is often used is a wet vac, which can soak and dry up both solid and liquid materials with ease.

#2: Remove Unpleasant Pet Smells and Odors

The way a carpet smells is equally as important as its physical appearance. Even after pet stains are no longer visible, sometimes the smell can linger on. If the smell of urine is still detectable, the chances are the pet will repeat an accident in the same area. To neutralize the unpleasant scents of urine and other pet-related odors, try out the following techniques:

  • Natural solutions: Some homeowners find great results by combining water, baking soda, and vinegar for a simple DIY method for getting rid of pesky scents.

  • Enzymatic cleaner: Not only do enzymatic cleaners help with the stain removal process itself, but they also have powerful enzymes that eat away at urine-based odors.

#3: Invest In The Right Clean Up Tools

A pet’s behaviors can sometimes be unpredictable, so it is always best to be prepared for a mess by investing in the right cleaning equipment. While professionals have much more effective and thorough equipment, there are a few everyday staples that belong in every household.

Some equipment ideas to get started with include:

  • Black lights for detecting stains in the carpet
  • Paper towels
  • Regular vacuums, pet handheld vacuums, or even wet vacs if needed
  • Pet odor and stain removers
  • Gloves and scoopers for cleaning poop

#4: Vacuum The Carpet Regularly

Most pets with long hair have bouts of excessive shedding, especially in the times when the seasons change. Before a buildup even occurs, vacuuming the carpet on a regular basis is the best way to keep a pet’s fur at bay. This is especially important for families with an allergy or sensitivity to their pet’s fur. Once or twice a week should probably do the trick!

#5: Stay On Top of Your Pet’s Hygiene

Much of the dirt and mud that stains a carpet comes from pets that aren’t properly cleaned after playing or walking outside. Before a pet is even allowed on the home’s carpet, it is important to inspect and wipe their paws and underbellies with a towel. This prevents unnecessary stains from accumulating over time. Furthermore, regularly bathing and brushing pets will help with excessive shedding and ensure that their coats are clean as can be!

#7: Never Wait To Clean Up A Mess

If a pet owner notices that their animal had an accident or stained the carpet with mud, it is crucial to act fast with the proper cleaning procedures. The quicker the mess is dealt with while it’s still wet, the less it will soak in and cause more permanent damages and odors deep into the carpet.

All in all, with the help of these simple cleaning tips and tricks, rest assured carpets and cherished pets can peacefully coexist in the home!

The Importance of Professional Carpet Cleaning

Whether or not there are pets present in a carpeted house, regularly cleaning a carpet with the help of professionals comes with many benefits. An amateur cleaning job doesn’t have the level of equipment and expertise that a professional cleaning technician provides.

Professional carpet cleaning with a high-quality company involves multiple steps, including pre-vacuuming to remove dry debris, pre-stain treatment, deep-cleaning, deodorizing, and a carpet protector to finish the job strong! Plus, hiring carpet professionals helps to:

  • Decrease Health Concerns: Carpets often hoard more pollutants than hard-surfaced floor options. Dirt, dust, mold, pollen, and other materials that sink into carpets are harmful to a home’s air quality and can worsen resident’s allergies. A professional cleaner goes much past the surface level to ensure that carpets are up to healthy standards.
  • Improve Aesthetic: Nobody likes the look of dirt, dust, or stains littering a carpet, especially when entertaining guests. Since DIY cleaning can only go so far, a professional job gets to the bottom of stains to significantly improve the look of carpets for years to come.
  • Save Money In The Long Run: The upfront cost of a professional cleaning job most definitely pays for itself over time. This is because regular maintenance will increase the number of years that a carpet is looking and feeling its best.

At-Home Disinfecting Can Be Harmful to Your Health

Since the start of the pandemic, many of us have been very focused on disinfection. We’re working harder than ever to wipe or clear away virus particles that we believe can make us sick.

But our disinfection practices could harm our health in other ways. Many of the household disinfectants that are commercially available – even ones we assume are environmentally safe – emit dangerous gases called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While you may have heard about VOCs contained in paint, vanish, and fuel, they’re also found in products like disinfecting wipes and air freshening spray.

What are the Health Risks of Using Products with VOCs?

Several studies have acknowledged a relationship between use of cleaning and disinfecting products and harmful health effects:

  • Use of sprays like window and glass cleaner, furniture polish, and air freshener was associated with a significant increase in asthma symptoms and wheezing.
  • Exposure to VOCs during pregnancy can cause lung function abnormalities in the user’s children.
  • Older women with long-term use of products with VOCs showed increased risk of cardiovascular issues.
  • Long-term exposure to VOCs also put the user at risk of damaging their liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. VOCs may also cause cancer.

The use of cleaning products that emit VOCs may also cause short-term health issues like skin reactions, headaches, nausea, and irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat.

Does Bleach Contain VOCs?

For years, we’ve heard that liquid bleach – in which the active ingredient is sodium hypochlorite – is the best way to disinfect. On its own, sodium hypochlorite doesn’t emit VOCs, but it’s very reactive. Even as bleach “mixes” with sunlight, it can produce chlorine gas, which can irritate your lungs.

But when bleach is added to common cleaning products like bathroom and kitchen cleaners, the combination of sodium hypochlorite and other ingredients like surfactants and fragrance, will produce harmful VOCs like chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. Both chloroform and carbon tetrachloride can damage human organs and the central nervous system.

Cleaning Products Contain the Highest Levels of VOCs

A 2018 study sought to determine the level of VOCs emitted by popular commercially-available household products. Of the product categories tested, those that produced the highest levels of VOCs were a well-known brand of wipes and an air freshener spray from a popular earth-friendly brand. Other brands in the wipes and air freshener categories were also high in VOCs.  Glass cleaning spray – from that same earth-friendly brand – also showed a high level of VOCs.

Is it Safe to Clean Your Own Carpet?

Those who attempt to do their own carpet cleaning risk more than just a poor result because of their inexperience using brand-name or store rental machines.  The latex backing used on 95% of carpets emits chemical gases that can irritate the eyes and lungs and can affect the central nervous system. The adhesive used on the backing also contains the VOCs benzene and toluene.

While the chemicals will gradually emit fewer gasses over time – and it’s usually only the first few months when the VOCs are at their highest level – your carpet can potentially give off VOCs for five years or longer. Only professional cleaning can remove all of the VOCs in carpeting.

Why You Need Professional Deep Cleaning Now

Even if you clean your home on a weekly basis, chances are that you’re not able to do the type of deep cleaning that’s only possible when you hire a professional cleaning company. Professional cleaners have the tools, knowledge, and skills to help eliminate the microorganisms that could potentially make you or your family members sick.

Bacteria, dust mites, allergens, mold, and other hazards are lurking in places that would surprise you, and because they can’t be seen, you’re likely to miss them during a routine household cleaning.

Where are Household Hazards Hiding?

Hazardous organisms are present in so many areas of your home – on your countertops, in and around your sinks, in your garbage pails, toilets, and even your mattresses. Most or all of these areas can be effectively cleaned using antibacterial and disinfectant products you can find in your local grocery store or online.

But there are some areas of your home that require professional deep-cleaning tools and cleaning agents in order to effectively banish the harmful bacteria, mold, pollen, and other allergens that can become embedded and difficult to extract.

Carpets and Rugs

Living in a mild and humid climate like Austin means that pollen and mold are abundant. Those harmful organisms can take a free ride on the bottom of your shoes and get trapped in your carpet and rug fibers when you walk on them. If you have a dog or cat, their fur and dander will also become embedded, and let’s not forget the 40,000 skin cells we shed each day.

Many people wait to schedule a professional rug or carpet cleaning when they notice visible stains. You can improve your home’s environment if you schedule regular carpet cleanings, whether or not your carpets and rugs appear dirty.

Floorboards

Did you know that bacteria and allergens can hide beneath your floorboards? You may think that dusting, vacuuming, and mopping the surface of your wood floors will provide a thorough cleaning, but only professional cleaning equipment can access those unhealthy organisms.

Upholstery

A comfy couch gets a lot of use, which means it absorbs body oils and sweat on a regular basis. Add the occasional spill, and your sofa may become a breeding ground for mildew, allergens, dust mites, and mold. Only professional equipment can reach the deeper layers of padding underneath the surface fabric, and help prevent allergies and illness.

Tile Grout

Several kinds of bacteria can live in the grout between your kitchen and bathroom tiles. Moisture in those rooms can also contribute to mold growth. If your grout is discolored or stained, that’s a sign of bacterial growth, and since grout is porous and absorbent, the bacteria can become entrenched beneath the surface.

Professional cleaning companies are equipped to remove the embedded bacteria, leaving your tile and grout both free from harmful substances and sparkling clean.

Air Ducts

Warm temperatures, dust, and moisture inside of your air ducts contribute to mold and bacterial growth, which then circulate through your home and can cause illness. A professional cleaning service will inspect your ducts, AC coils, vents, and the HVAC unit itself, and then eliminate any mold or bacterial growth found. As a bonus, once your ducts are thoroughly cleaned, you’ll notice that your HVAC system works more efficiently.

Make Your Home Healthier with Professional Deep Cleaning

Professional deep cleaning does much more than beautify your home and restore life to your carpets, surfaces, and furnishings. It’s also an effective way to keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy. Save Time Cleaning with These Simple Hacks

Do you like a clean house — but hate cleaning? While a clean house can be satisfying or even rewarding, sometimes you don’t want to spend your entire weekend doing a deep clean of every nook and cranny. Rest assured, there are ways for you to maintain a spotless household while also cutting down on the amount of time and money you spend vacuuming, dusting, and scrubbing.

Taking Preventative Cleaning Measures

Most of us wait till the weekend to clean our houses. But by then, the damage has already been done. Using some simple preventative measures will make cleaning easier, faster, and overall less of a drag.

If we take the time to clean a little every day, vacuum one room a day, dust or spot clean every couple of days, the task of cleaning will be so much easier come the weekend. Here are some words to live by: Things that don’t get dirty don’t need to be cleaned.

However, we understand that accidents can and will happen and messes cannot be avoided. Here are some easy cleaning hacks that will improve your cleaning life in no time.

12 Cleaning Hacks to Save Time and Money and Improve Your Life

1. Dishwashers Aren’t Just for Dishes.

You can put close to everything in your dishwasher. Refrigerator shelves, fan filters, and many plastic toys can be run through the dishwasher. You can also throw any most glass light fixtures into the dishwasher, rather than dusting them or washing them by hand.  Note: no electronics.

2. Flour is your Friend.

If you have kids or are constantly dropping things and finding yourself on your hands and knees wiping and scrubbing spills out of a carpet, just remember you have flour in your pantry.

Rather than throwing away money on rolls and rolls of paper towels, you can throw some flour over the mess. The flour will soak up the spill and make the clean-up much faster.

3. Use a Pillowcase on Your Ceiling Fan.

Do you have a ceiling fan? They can be a pain to dust. Every time we do, the dust flies everywhere. The quickest fix is to slip a pillowcase over the fan blades and simply wipe off. Rather than falling on the floor, the dust will go straight into the pillowcase making for an easy clean-up.

4. Clean While You Sleep.

No matter how much elbow grease you apply, some mildew stains just won’t come out. No problem. Just get some cotton balls and soak them in bleach. Place the cotton balls along the grout or sealant where your stains are.

Go to sleep and let the cotton balls do the cleaning for you! When you wake up, you can remove them and–voila!–no more stains.

5. Use Cling-film.

Try using fling-film on the shelves of your refrigerator. While they won’t prevent future messes, they will make it so you won’t have to clean your fridge as often. And when you need to clean the refrigerator, you can remove the cling-film and wipe down the shelves without wasting time spraying and scrubbing.

6. Break Out the Citrus and Salt.

Cut a lemon or a grapefruit in half and sprinkle a little salt on it. Now you have a great, all-natural way to get rid of the soap scum in your shower.

7. Kitchen Tongs + Microfiber = Clean Blinds.

Wrap a couple of microfiber towels around your kitchen tongs. Now you have a perfect way to clean both the tops and bottoms of your blinds in one quick swoop.

8. Use Your AC as a Dust Collector.

The next time you dust your house, try turning on your AC. The fan will suck up any dust particles and allergens that get kicked up.

9. Your Broom is also a Duster.

By tying a microfiber cloth around your broom, you now suddenly have the perfect duster. You can reach high and low, cleaning the cobwebs off the ceiling and the dust off the baseboards. No need to get a chair or throw out your back.

10. Squeegee and Water Spray.

If you own a dog, you know how difficult it is to clean up dog hair off the sofa, out of your car, pretty much anywhere that is not a hard, flat surface. Just spray a little water over the dog hair and use the squeegee to scrape. The dog hair will clump right up and you can use a paper towel to clean up the rest. Problem solved.

11. Buy Baking Soda.

Baking soda is the miracle powder of home cleaning. It’s excellent for degreasing, deodorizing, and cleaning. That’s because baking soda is not only an abrasive, but it’s also a natural whitener. You can use it to get rid of nasty smells, get rid of sticky layers of grease, and clean grout.

12. Get Professional Steam Cleaning

No matter how much you vacuum or scrub, your carpet and upholstery can hold on to dirt, bacteria, mildew, and more. A carpet steaming service will not only make your floors look like new, but the process will make your whole home feel and smell cleaner than ever before.

Top 4 Reasons to Use Professional Sanitization & Disinfection Services

1) Professional Disinfection Services Have Access to More Effective Cleaning Tools and Equipment

Conventional cleaning tools marketed to the general public are not going to give you the kind of results that professional-grade equipment can. Consumer-marketed products are designed for occasional use, and because they have to be affordable for the average homeowner or renter, they’re not made with commercial-grade components. The average vacuum or steam cleaner you can buy at a big box store just isn’t up to the task.

While you could purchase professional-grade equipment, you’ll have to pay a lot for the commercial-grade materials and the technology that’s priced into these machines. That’s not realistic for most business owners.

2) Professional Disinfection Services Employ Trained and Skilled Staff

Even if you did have access to professional cleaning and disinfecting equipment, would you know how to use it properly? The American Cleaning Institute recently surveyed over 1,000 adults and asked them about their knowledge of disinfectant use. Only a little over half the respondents knew how to use cleaning solutions and tools effectively.

Professional cleaners must train for many hours to learn how to use specialized equipment correctly. Just because you think you know how to wipe a countertop or vacuum carpet doesn’t mean you have the skills to effectively disinfect your work or home space.

Because professional cleaning services use trained, skilled staff, they can quickly and efficiently complete the job. Trying to disinfect your space on your own is not a good use of your time. Your hours are better spent taking care of your guests, tending to your patients, managing your regular day-to-day operations.

3) Professional Disinfection Services Have the Tools to Disinfect with Eco-Friendly Cleaning Techniques

You’ve seen the “green” products available in your local retail store, but they’re not useful for keeping germs, bacteria, and viruses at bay. The mass-marketed products that do claim to kill almost 100% of pathogens are not environmentally friendly. So, how can you ensure that your space is sanitized while also protecting the planet? Some professional cleaning services are using advanced technology to sanitize and disinfect in a way that’s safe and sustainable. These are the type of cleaning methods that you can’t access on your own.

4) Professional Disinfection Services Will Clean According to Your Schedule

If you run a business or manage an organization, you likely demand that your employees or staff are productive. It’s not feasible to have the space cleaned during normal business hours. But you can schedule professional cleaning at a time that best suits your needs – before or after business hours – so that no time is lost.

Which Organizations Should Consider Commercial Sanitation and Disinfectant Services?

Any place that’s regularly inhabited by large numbers of people can benefit from professional disinfection:

  • Office Buildings
  • Schools – from Pre-K up to the university level
  • Hospitals – including smaller clinics and emergency health-care facilities
  • Nursing Homes and other long-term care facilities
  • Hotels/Hospitality
  • Medical and Dental Offices
  • Fitness Centers and Gyms
  • Restaurants and Bars
  • Retail Establishments
  • Places of Worship
  • Community Centers
  • Public Transportation

How Your Business or Organization Can Benefit From Professional Sanitization and Disinfection

When your workspace is clean and safe from pathogens, you can feel confident that you’re providing a healthy environment for residents, guests, and employees. Keeping your space sanitized can mean fewer sick days for employees and an overall healthier work or living environment. When employees are healthy and feel good in their environment, they’ll have better morale and be more productive. Healthier guests and patrons translates into return visits and favorable attitudes about your establishment.

Infection Control Services in Austin, Texas

At WOW Total Cleaning and Restoration, we utilize the most advanced sanitation and disinfection techniques. Patented Activated Ionized Hydrogen Peroxide (AIHP) technology can sanitize hard-to-access surfaces that cannot be reached by ordinary disinfectants. It’s also a green way to disinfect, and will not harm the environment with toxic by-products.

It’s called SteraMist, and it uses oxidation to destroy proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. The oxidation process eliminates bacteria and mold spores and inactivates viruses – including the common cold and the flu. Other benefits include:

  • No harmful byproducts are left behind – only oxygen and water
  • No noxious fumes from bleach or chlorine
  • Leaves no residue. The solution rapidly breaks down into mist and oxygen.

Keep Your Family Safe With Eco Friendly Carpet Cleaning

Ecofriendly carpet cleaningIf you’re not careful, you could be adding more pollution to your home – and the environment – when you get your carpets professionally cleaned. The chemicals used by some professional carpet cleaning companies can emit toxic fumes that could harm your body and potentially cause cancer. Plus, when the rinse water is sent down the drain, it will enter public water systems, which can lead to environmental damage.

Learn what are the most harmful chemicals used by some professional cleaners, and how eco-friendly or “green” cleaning makes a difference in terms of both efficacy and health.

Which Carpet Cleaning Chemicals are the Most Harmful?

The most dangerous chemicals used by some professional cleaning services are tetrachloroethylene (also known as perchlorethylene), naphthalene, and butyloxy ethanol.

Tetrachloroethylene

  • The most common effects from lower level exposure are headaches, cognitive and motor functioning impairment, and problems with color vision.
  • At higher levels, liver and kidney damage may occur, and studies have shown its impact on immune function.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies tetrachloroethylene as carcinogenic to humans.

Naphthalene

  • The active ingredient in mothballs. Several prominent health organizations have warned about the dangers surrounding the use of mothballs and other products that include naphthalene.
  • Commonly used by some professional carpet cleaning companies because it dissolves dirt well. But it’s manufactured from coal tar and can harm the central nervous system.
  • The EPA classifies naphthalene as a possible human carcinogen.

Butoxyethanol

  • While not found to be carcinogenic, may cause neurotoxicity (loss of coordination and sluggishness) and possible skin and eye irritation.
  • It can enter your body by breathing in vapors or by contact with the skin.
  • It’s most harmful in higher concentrations – likely for someone who works regularly with the chemical – but it’s concerning that small children who roll around and play on carpeting could be exposed either through vapors or skin contact.
  • The National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants regulates this chemical under the Clean Air Act.

Other harmful ingredients that may be found in commercial carpet cleaners include:

  • Acids
  • Ammonia
  • Chlorine
  • Formaldehyde
  • Petroleum-based products
  • Sodium hydroxide (lye)

What is Green Cleaning?

When you hear that a product is “green,” that’s code for ingredients and methods that are safe and healthful for humans and the environment. Green and eco-friendly products typically are free from bleach, triclosan, parabens, and phthalates, and many also steer clear of artificial colors and fragrances.

Green may also indicate how a product or ingredient is sourced, as is the case with sustainable growing practices, organic farming, and fair trade policies. Companies may also use recyclable packaging or contribute in other ways to environmental organizations. But in terms of green cleaning products, the emphasis is on whether or not the ingredients that make up the cleaning solution are safe for people and the planet.

As consumers, we’re helped by labeling that shows us whether or not a product is eco friendly. For example, an independent nonprofit organization called Green Seal will issue a green checkmark to companies that meet its safety standards. There’s also the (DfE) label from the EPA, which means Design for the Environment. Some products are also labeled to indicate they have a low concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOC).

Is Green Cleaning as Effective as Cleaning with Chemicals?

You like doing your part to keep your family safe and to lessen environmental harm. But do these green and eco-friendly cleaning products really work?

Part of the proof is on the supermarket shelves. If green cleaning was just a fad and these products weren’t effective, consumers would stop buying them. But we’re seeing more brands – even the bigger ones – shift to including green ingredients or at least to designate a product line devoted to it.

If you search the internet for eco cleaners, you’re bound to come across hundreds of videos that can prove how effectively these safe ingredients can work. Some of these DIY products can even kill germs and disinfect.

But if you’re planning to clean your carpets, it’s a difficult job to do on your own. You may be able to rent a commercial cleaner, but you likely don’t have the experience and skills to use it in the most effective way.

Green Seal Awarded Carpet Cleaners in Austin

WOW Total Cleaning has earned the Green Seal of approval for meeting environmental safety standards and can achieve the results you want without causing harm to you, your family, or the environment.

You may be able to do your own green cleaning in other parts of your home, but carpet cleaning is best left to the experts.  Supermarket or big box store rental carpet cleaning machines can’t match the equipment our company owns, and our staff has the knowledge, training, and experience required to use it properly.

WOW Total Cleaning is family-owned and has been serving the Austin area for more than 15 years. We’re a dedicated team that’s committed to providing the best quality service at fair prices. Contact us today to learn more about our eco-friendly methods.

Top 6 Benefits of Upholstery & Carpet Cleaning

Many people consider professional carpet cleaning an occasion-specific job – like when you’re throwing a big party or you’re about to sell your home. Or they may only think about hiring a carpet or upholstery cleaner when there’s a stubborn stain they can’t get out on their own. But there are a number of other good reasons why professional cleaning should be kept top-of-mind.

Less Costly and Burdensome Than DIY Methods

You’re convinced you can get rid of that tough stain because you read something on Pinterest, saw a miracle product on Facebook, or figure you’ll just rent a “professional” machine. But professional carpet and upholstery cleaners have the training and skills to completely eliminate stubborn stains. They also use stronger products that are not available to the general public. And while you think you may be saving money by renting a cleaner, you may not know how to use it properly, and then there’s the additional hassle of having to bring it home and return it. The truth is, you may not have to spend much more to have your home cleaned professionally.

Safer Than DIY Methods

Not only can DIY methods fail to get the job done, they can actually harm your carpet and furniture. Improper techniques can cause furniture to pill and shed – and the damage can spread much further than the original stain. As for DIY carpet cleaning, adding too much water, applying the wrong chemicals or detergents, using incorrect techniques, and failing to rinse and dry properly can make a bad situation even worse.

Improves Indoor Air Quality

Ordinary vacuuming can remove dirt, debris, and allergens at surface-level only. Professional carpet cleaning can extract deeply embedded pollutants, dirt, bacteria, mold, dander, pollen, and dust mites. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, a professional carpet cleaning can make life more bearable. And it’s not just your carpeting that can trap these particles. Harmful materials can build up on any fabric-covered piece of furniture, which can lead to respiratory issues if not cleaned correctly.

Validates Your Warranty

Did you know your carpet warranty may require you to have a professional cleaning every 12-18 months? It’s common not to give much thought to the warranty once the carpet is installed, but just in case you ever have to replace your carpet, make sure you abide by the terms of the contract. The same requirement may also be included in your furniture warranty, so always read the fine print.

Extends the Life of Your Carpet and Furniture

It’s unpleasant to think about, but every time you sit on your upholstered furniture or walk on your carpet, you deposit body oils, sweat, and dirt. If you have animals in the house, their dander can also become embedded in the fibers. And dust is simply impossible to avoid. Professional cleaning is the best, most thorough way to remove the dirt, dust, oils, allergens, bacteria, mold, and odors trapped in your carpet and furniture, and if you regularly maintain your floor coverings and home furnishings, they’ll last longer and look better in your home.

Helps Prevent Against Future Stains

Professional carpet cleaning can also help prevent future stains. Patented products – that can only be applied by a professional cleaning company – form a protective shield around each carpet fiber that resists stain and repels liquids. And these products can also be applied to upholstery! Wouldn’t it be nice to make stains just one less thing you need to worry about?

Debunking DIY Carpet Cleaners: Don’t Try These 5 Tips!

Everyone’s an expert on the internet. Simply type a question into Google, and you’ll see a thousand articles and YouTube videos instructing you on how to solve your problem in the quickest, easiest, and most efficient way possible. The problem is, most of these people aren’t actually experts. Some of the advice you’ll find online is flat-out wrong, and carpet cleaning is an excellent example of this.

In this article, we’re debunking some of the most blatantly incorrect information on the internet when it comes to getting stains out of your carpets–stay away from this incorrect advice if you want to take good care of your floors. Don’t turn to unreliable methods like vinegar and ammonia to clean your carpets–instead, enlist the help of dependable and professional carpet cleaners in Austin.

Vinegar

Vinegar is a versatile item that has so many helpful uses. Unfortunately, removing stains from your carpet isn’t one of them. A number of bloggers might recommend mixing vinegar with water, baking soda, or other substances to remove stubborn stains. While vinegar has its uses in cleaning, the simple facts of the matter is that vinegar does not remove stains.

Some vinegar-related cleaning “tips” you’ll find on the internet are outright dangerous. A few tutorials might recommend that you mix vinegar with hydrogen peroxide, but if you do this, you’ll create a dangerous acid that can cause skin irritation and even respiratory problems. All this is to say, if you’re trying to clean your own carpets, steer clear of the vinegar.

Hot Iron

On paper, it might make sense to try cleaning your carpets with your personal hot iron. After all, that sounds like a miniature version of the professional steam cleaning that carpeting cleaning companies perform! But in reality, using an iron to clean your carpet is extremely risky.

It can easily burn your carpet, which can leave a permanent mark: it might not come as a surprise that there is no way to remove a burn from your carpet without installing a new one entirely. The bloggers might be excited about using hot irons, but unless you’re excited about leaving an ugly mark on your carpet, put the iron away and call professional carpet cleaners in Austin instead.

Dish Soap

Dish soap is already a cleaning material, so it shouldn’t hurt to apply it on your carpets, right?

While soap can be effective at removing carpet stains, it can be difficult, if not impossible to get it to work like intended. When you use soap on your dishes, you scrub and rinse each dish after applying the soap to make it clean; and when you use soap in your laundry machine, your clothes are rinsed and dried before they are fully clean.

Because of the nature of carpeting, you can’t adequately rinse and dry your carpets, meaning that dish soap will ultimately be ineffective.

Hydrogen Peroxide

We’ve already seen that you should never mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar to use as a cleaning agent, but what about hydrogen peroxide on its own? After all, it’s one of the most popular natural cleaning materials on the market in general, and plenty of bloggers, forum posters, and YouTubers recommend using it for carpet cleaning.

But here’s an important thing to know about hydrogen peroxide: it’s a bleaching agent. If you use a hydrogen peroxide solution of 7% or higher, you will certainly bleach your carpets. You even run a risk of bleaching with lower concentrations as well. Do you really want to permanently stain your carpet with a “cleaner”?

Ammonia

It’s a great idea to try and use green cleaning materials to reduce the presence of chemicals in your home, but using ammonia goes against that directly. Ammonia is a high-alkaline solution that permanently damages wool carpet and rugs by degrading carpet fibers, stripping away manufacturer stain guards that were already in your carpet, and destabilizing your carpet’s color. Because it is a chemical substance, using ammonia can produce toxic fumes that can be harmful to pets and children.

Tile & Grout Care 101

Ceramic tiles are the perfect design choice for any home, and with some basic routine care, your flooring will maintain its quality for years and years.

Basic Ceramic Tile Care

In addition to sweeping and mopping, there are a few routine measures you should take every few months to maintain your tile and grout.

  • Wipe down tiles with a non-oil-based household cleaner (for some tiles, oil-based cleaners may break down their protective lining or seep into the grout)
  • Vacuum glazed tiles to remove dirt and large particles to prevent them from scratching the tiles’ glaze
  • Clean unglazed tiles with a combination of water and soapless detergent, which is less likely to stain the tile over traditional all-purpose cleaners

Basic Grout Cleaning

Grout is usually trickier to clean than tile, since the material itself is porous and not always sealed. We always recommend sealing your grout for easier maintenance, and it’s best to apply sealer twice a year to ensure the grout is protected.

If your grout is sealed, you’ll want to use the same cleaner as your tiles to clean the grout. Unfortunately, even sealed grout may take a bit of elbow grease to scrub away any stains, residue, or even particles that may get trapped on the surface.

If you notice your grout is beginning to become discolored or if it’s putting up too much of a fight to be cleaned, it’s time to hire professional grout cleaning

Professional Tile and Grout Cleaning in Austin

If your tiles have been neglected or are in a high-traffic area, like a kitchen or front entrance, your floors will need more heavy-duty cleaning than an occasional mop. However, always test stronger cleaning methods on a small section of tile out of sight before cleaning the entire floor. While professional tile cleaners will know the kind of cleaner your tile needs, it can often be hard to pick a solution that won’t damage, degrade, or discolor your tile.

If you’re uncertain about how to clean your tiles and grouts, always contact a professional tile and grout cleaner.

If you decide to clean your floors yourself, the first step is to scour the glazed tiles with scouring powder or non-metallic pad. Again, be sure that the powder or force don’t actually scratch or harm the glaze of the tile! Next, use a commercial tile cleaner, a strong solution of an all-purpose, non-oil-based cleaner or scouring powder paste. Let it stand for a few minutes, brush, scrub, wipe down with water, and dry. Once the tiles are dry, we recommend applying more sealant– but only once you’re absolutely certain there are no particles that could become trapped!

While we’re always happy to help our clients with DIY tile and grout cleaning, we know that it’s a lot of work and can be expensive for homeowners. By utilizing our professional services, you don’t have to worry about damaging your floors or exposing your home to harsh chemicals.
